A secure sockets layer, or SSL for short, is a tool developed to help keep information safe while using the internet.  It was developed by Netscape in the early 1990's in an effort to provide a safe medium and mode for transporting valuable information over the internet from one place to another.  With so many hackers and computer problems out there a safe and secure system was needed to prevent and vital information from slipping out.  The program uses a cryptographic system that uses two separate keys to encrypt data to prevent anyone besides the recipients from getting it.  There is a public key that everyone can read and a second private key that only the recipient is able to read.  Netscape and Internet Explorer except SSL servers as a mode for information to travel well protected and secure.  Many websites use SSL protocol to obtain information from users and customers such as their credit card information when making transactions over the internet.  SSL is designed to help keep our information safe and prevent an attack from outside hackers and identity thieves.  SSL programs are designed to create a safe mode of transportation of information from a client to a server.  This way the server can receive the information without any outside interference.   There is endpoint authentication that prevents anything from being unencrypted or taken until it reaches the server, or the end of its journey.  That way nothing from the message being sent can be found out until the message reaches the server or recipient.  When only the endpoint has authentication the sender is aware of the server and where it is sending the information, but the server does not know where it is coming from.  This is considered unilateral authentication.  There is also mutual authentication where the server knows the senders identity and the sender also knows the servers identity.  Typically both systems would have to have SSL protocol to establish a certified connection both ways. 


SSL Systems are fairly flexible.  They are forwards and backwards compatible.  This means they are able to work with older versions and newer versions of itself. That can be very handy these says as many people have different versions and needs in a computer.  They may not need the newest SSL so they have an older version.  So many systems require you to have the most updated system to work and that can be difficult to do and deal with at times.  Being forwards and backwards compatible is very user friendly and can be great for those who like specifics of one version over the other.  There is also a negotiation between computers when used.  It may modify to accept an older version when connecting to other systems which can allow you to connect to more places easier and cause less problems later on.
